Hi Peter,
I tried it out, and the same the process that worked for Books works for PDFs.
1). Open iTunes and click on PDFs2). Select the book you want to add cover art to and select Get Info from the File menu3). Click on the Artwork tab4). Click the Add… button select the file that contains the image you want to use for the cover art. Alternatively, you can paste an image from your clipboard into the box.5). Click OK and you are done.

I hope this is clear, I just read it back and I'm not sure if everyone will get it. I would like covers for my PDF s in iBooks. The app seems to make default covers which is fine but they only appear when the app opens does any one know how to turn this feature on.

Thanks again pete

Hi guys,
How do you get the PDF covers from apple displayed for PDF s saved in iBooks?
I noticed the covers sometimes pop up for a second then go. Ther are easier to read than just the blank white page with some illedigable small script.
Does any one know
Thanks Pete

I've used wikipedia to find cover art for both CDs and books when I don't like the art that comes with the ones I've purchased. It usually has a good picture of the original printing. Sometimes they are scans of ratty copies, but I find that adds to the charm.

It doesn't appear that iTunes allow you to change the artwork on a PDF, only ePubs. Here is a work around using Preview:
